Organ donation is very much common among young generations. Most of them want to donate the organ like a kidney to help humanity while others contribute to earn money. The governments and health practitioners have designed policies regarding organ donation. These policies vary from country to country. There are two types of organ donation strategies. These are opt-in and opt-out.
Both systems are different and offer different benefits.
To analyze which one is best, health practitioners have studied donation protocols of 48 countries to check which approach is best. It has been seen in hospitals in the US every 10 minutes there is a patient for donation. So the hospitals keep the donated organs to help the person coming for transplant.
Opt-in system
With an opt-in system, people get register themselves to donate their organs after death. So hospitals take out the organ and preserve to donate to the patient who needs the transplant. The opt-in system can be a false negative if a person wants to be a donor but does not contribute. This is less popular as compared to other system and people less likely to opt for this option.
Opt-out donation
In this system, the organization takes out of the organ after death. Although the patient doesn’t get register himself, the family members are asked before the doctors take out organ for a donation purpose. In this situation, if a person requests not to take an organ after death, the doctor cannot take out the organ. In opt-out, a person can be a false positive if a person doesn’t want to donate but become a donor.
Which system is better?
In the USA, the current policy is for opt-in. The doctors prefer the only person who has requested to donate their organs after death. In previous years, the US has controlled deaths because of excessive donors in the state. Although still, people die because of the unavailability of donors yet the rate has been declined. Now more people survive after getting an organ transplant.
The research has shown that out of 48 countries, about 23 countries are using opt-in systems while the rest 25 are using opt-out systems. The countries using the opt-out system have more donations and have a large number of organ transplants compared to countries with an opt-in system.
Final thoughts
According to the researchers and study published in BMC Medicine, the opt-out consent helps increase the deceased donation, but there are fewer living donation rates. Moreover, opt-out consent improves the number of livers and kidneys. There is an improvement in the transplantation of organs. A large number of studies are going on to analyze the opinions to suggest which one is best. It all depends on the influence on the rate of organ donation and the rates of transplantation.
But if we consider the current situation, opt-out is the better option. The families permit to donate the organ and help the patients to survive by getting an organ transplant.
