HIV/AIDS: What Methods of Treatment Can the Modern Medicine Offer?
HIV

Date

So far, no cure for HIV AIDS has been discovered yet.

The disease is deadly, hence the need to develop treatment to suppress its effects. Modern medicine has developed anti – retroviral therapy (ART). This is the best recommendation for all patients regardless of their duration with the virus or how healthy they may appear to be. ART minimizes the quantity of HIV in the blood, helping the body to fight effectively infections.

ART Treatment as a Preventive Measure

ART treatment is preventive. The patient must take the ART drugs every day as per the physician’s advice. Regular blood check – ups are crucial in ensuring the virus remains undetectable. HIV patients can live normal lives with minimal risk of infecting their negative partners, especially during sexual intercourse. This is only achievable if the infected persons can be caring enough to avoid recklessness.

Risk of Leaving the Virus Untreated

HIV hinders the immune system’s strength, making the body vulnerable to all types of diseases. When the CD4 count drops below a particular mark, the chances of contracting infectious diseases are high. Infectious diseases often target weakened immune systems, and an untreated HIV patient is at a higher risk of contracting these diseases. The physician may recommend drug prescriptions to help you fight the infections.

It is essential for the patient to know the expectations and commit to following the drugs’ prescription according to the doctor’s advice. Having some knowledge about HIV infection, prevention and treatment can help patients and their families manage it.

At What Stage Must Treatment Commence?

HIV AIDS treatment should begin immediately after a diagnosis. The virus effects will drop, allowing the body to maintain a strong immune system. Modern medicine provides three types of tests to diagnose the disease – antigen, antibody, and saliva. Treatment applies to people of all ages, both young and old.

Are There Any Side Effects Associated With ART Treatment?

Yes, ART can result in various side effects. It is a new substance introduced to the body hence could trigger some reactions. The patient can react to the drugs at the beginning of the treatment or later. The side effects are minimal with the current ART drugs. These effects may not be the same for every individual patient. Some patients may experience severe cases that could cause them to stop taking the medicine. It is riskier because skipping doses could destroy the body’s immunity, reducing chances for success with treatment alternatives in the future. Some common side effects of ART include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Insomnia
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness

The side effects may differ with gender. Women will display certain symptoms that may not show among men. Regular consultations with healthcare providers are crucial i n understanding and remedying these side effects. The doctor could recommend side effects minimizing drugs or another alternative ART.

Conclusion

HIV AIDS does not discriminate, and it is deadly. With only a preventive treatment available, people need to protect themselves against the virus. Creating awareness of the disease and understanding its treatment can help minimize it.
